"Nuts used to be derided as unhealthy snack foods akin to potato chips, but two studies that examined the dietary intake of over 110,000 people determined that a weekly nut consumption of 5 oz. or more was associated with a 35 to 50 percent decrease in the incidence of heart disease and death. Just remember that while nuts are healthy, they are still highly caloric and can contribute to obesity if eaten in excess. MayoClinic.com recommends using nuts as a replacement for foods high in saturated fats, like meat, dairy and eggs.
