I’ve been asked what the difference is between anaerobic and aerobic exercise. This is a simple explanation of the two…

They are basically opposites. Anaerobic means “without oxygen” and aerobic means “with oxygen”. One of the major differences between these two is the duration and intensity level.
Aerobic exercise requires you to move your large muscle groups and requires an increase in oxygen through your cardiopulmonary system. Walking, jogging, swimming, hiking and bicycling are a few examples of aerobic exercise.
Like I mentioned, duration and intensity level are factors. Anaerobic exercise relies on muscle strength, not oxygen to perform activities. Anaerobic exercise requires short spurts of intense muscle activity like that found in weight lifting and sprinting. Since oxygen isn’t involved in supplying energy to the body for these activities, they are usually done in short durations.

Basically aerobic exercise is longer-duration and lower-intensity, while anaerobic exercise is shorter-duration and high-intensity. Combining the two, along with a clean diet, will elicit the best results when it comes to fat loss. =)
