I’ve never quite understood this phenomenon… When I see people at the gym crank the treadmill incline all the way up, and then hang onto the handrails and lean back… why?

By doing that, you virtually take away the incline. Just because the calorie counter on the machine SAYS you’re burning X amount of calories, doesn’t mean it’s accurate… especially if you’re “cheating”.

If what you’re doing is so difficult that you have to hang onto the handrail, it would be a better idea to start with something more manageable that you can handle and build your way up. I realize that some machines, like the stairmaster, can be dangerous if you don’t steady yourself (I can attest to that one!) … but the treadmill is not one of those machines! Unless you have a medical reason for doing so, don’t hang onto the handrail. Get the full workout by using your arms and legs for momentum! =)
