In order to avoid a lot of the chemicals and junk that goes into packaged goods, I typically make my own food. Baking my own protein bars has especially been useful when on the go, because I can control what goes into them!

I see a lot of girls posting on here about Luna bars and Lara bars as if they were some kind of magic. Let’s take a closer look at them though. It’s important to learn how to read labels, so when you ARE in a situation where you have to grab something quick like a protein bar, you can make the best choice. (If you don’t believe any of the following stats, feel free to look it up yourself!)

Most of the Luna bars I looked at have around 10 grams of sugar per bar…. which is as much as a glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut.
Most of the Lara bars I looked at have around 22 grams of sugar per bar… which is as much as a Twinkie. It’s also more sugar than a glazed Krispy Kreme, a serving of Fruit Loops, a serving of Ben & Jerry’s vanilla ice cream, a grande caffe latte from Starbucks, and a Mrs. Field Chocolate Chip Cookie.

While I recognize that there are other benefits that come with Lara bars besides the sugar content (such as the minimal, natural ingredient list).. what I’m trying to get you to realize… is that sometimes foods we label as “healthy” are not always the best choice… especially if you are on a fat loss journey! Most protein bars are simply CANDY BARS with some protein in them. Be wary of this is all I’m saying. If you like Lara bars and they keep you from having those Twinkies and other junk, go for it… but keep in mind that if you aren’t seeing results in your fat loss efforts, the choices you are making nutrition wise might have something to do with it! Sugar is a big culprit when it comes to fat loss! We don’t always realize that the things we ingest daily can have a huge impact on our bodies! Educate yourselves… knowledge is power =)
